Our challenge lay in how to visualise the different types of data across the framework and communicate the information in a way that it’s easily understood. Our project team included specialists who researched the needs and preferences of the primary audiences: those within the cancer control community, including health professionals, researchers, policy makers, and consumers affected by cancer.
Data gathered from cancer research is crucial when deciding where cancer control efforts are best placed. Cancer Australia created the National Cancer Control Indicators, a reporting framework for national cancer control data to inform policy and practice - and ultimately, improve cancer outcomes.

The challenge

Evolving the narrative with multiple contexts
Through our design process, an insight that emerged was the value in crafting stories from multiple reporting measures. New narratives could be told by reusing data visualisations and highlights in new contexts, featured as a story. This flexibility allows for integration with other Cancer Australia campaigns, providing a more cohesive outcome.
Driving change and best practice in cancer control
The aim of this product is not simply to report statistics, but to drive change and support best practice in cancer control. Our report provided recommendations for scientific visual communication, so the data is easily understood and supports decision makers driving change in this discipline.
Project highlights
We delivered an interactive exploration of complex health data in a clear and accessible way.
Enabled clear understanding of the cancer control data by implementing good practice data visualisation.
Contributing recommendations for the framework itself through specialist analysis of the data and suggesting additional data linkages.
Focusing on what these informed users really need, by adopting a 'mobile first' approach.

An agile and truly collaborative relationship
Our iterative delivery methodology allowed us to work collaboratively, keeping Cancer Australia informed by showing progress early and often, and refining the product based on their feedback on a weekly cycle. This ensured the final product delivered on initial objectives, but also evolved their vision beyond their expectations.

Efficient data management and content maintenance
Building on more than a decade of our experience with Drupal, we delivered on project objectives for ease of data management and content maintenance, through special customisations to the administration of the application.
Improving national cancer outcomes
Providing a digital platform for bringing together national cancer data and monitoring these indicators and measures delivers on Cancer Australia’s strategic goal to improve cancer outcomes across the Australian population, through data-informed and targeted strategies.
